Amalgam Alternatives

That's me in the middle with two of my sons- just come in after a good surf at Maori Bay. My sons have some advantages over me- they're bigger than me, they surf better than me and they've got no fillings in their teeth. But if they did have fillings, no way would I have filled their teeth with amalgam- a mixture of junk metals suspended in up to half a gram of mercury per filling. Mercury is one of the most toxic elements in the chemical tree, more toxic than lead or even arsenic, not only a powerful neurotoxin but also toxic to every cell in the body.

You are probably aware that mercury is vaporized off the surface of your amalgam fillings continuously and that most of the mercury is absorbed into your body. However, you may not be aware that you can be exposed to more mercury when your amalgam fillings are removed by a dentist than the amount of mercury released from your fillings had they been left in place indefinitely. Therefore, the decision to have your amalgam fillings removed must be considered carefully.

At Amalgam Alternatives North Harbour Dental we ensure that you are not exposed to mercury vapour released when your amalgam fillings are removed by carrying out the protocol for safe amalgam removal as recommended by the IAOMT. (International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology)

You'll look great

and will enjoy the peace of

mind of knowing you no longer

have a toxic metal in your teeth. Amalgam Alternatives at North Harbour Dental does not gaurantee that safe amalgam removal will result in an improvement of your health. However, feedback

from patients has been

overwhelmingly

positive.

At North Harbour

Dental we follow the IAOMT

protocol of Safe Amalgam Removal

for your protection. This involves:

-Mandatory rubber dam -to protect you

from the toxic slurry formed when your

amalgam fillings are drilled out.

-Alternate Air Supply- to protect you from the mercury vaporised off the filling and the aerosoled mist of toxic particles produced by the the high speed handpiece as the fillings are removed.

-Sequential amalgam removal based on

galvanic reading (not evidence based).

-Systemmic protection and mercury

detox programs arranged.

-All amalgam removed.

-IV Vitamin C available.

At a comprehensive

30 minute consultation

appointment (cost $135), your

needs and requirements and any

questions you have relating to your dental issues will be discussed. Following this, a full dental examination is carried out in which necessary X-rays and galvanic readings of each amalgam filling are taken. An individual treatment plan is then prepared regarding treatment options, number and

lengths of appointments required

and the cost of each

appointment.

Amalgam fillings

contain mercury which vaporises

off the filling surface continuously.

The rate of vaporisation increases with the eating of hot and spicy foods, chewing and

the grinding of teeth. It also increases considerably when your dentist drills amalgam fillings out. Mercury is colourless, odourless tasteless and toxic- more toxic than arsenic and lead, though not as toxic as plutonium! If you  want your amalgam fillings removed but don't want to be exposed to more mercury, attend North Harbour Dental where safe

amalgam removal techniques

are employed.

There can be no

assurance that your health

will improve following the safe removal

of your amalgam fillings. The majority of

patients who have undergone amalgam removal

and a detox program maintain that their health has improved- often in subtle ways e.g. no metallic taste, increased energy, fewer colds and flu, feeling better within themselves, less allergies etc. This does not constitute proof that amalgam removal will result in a health benefit. A NZ study by Linda Jones (see links) concluded that "health outcomes were experienced as positive and enduring once de-amalgamation and

detoxification were complete for

the majority of

participants'"

Composite fillings

do not last as long as amalgam

fillings because their longevity is

dependent on the quality of the bond between

the composite and the tooth. When the bond

fails recurrent decay sets in or the filling falls out.

Large fillings challenge the bond because of the filling flexing under load and ideally a porcelain or gold inlay or even a crown is a better alternative. Many patients elect to have composites. as inlays and crowns may be three to five times the cost. The maximum longevity for a large composite filling is 15 years (average 8-12) providing a stringent placement technique is provided. At NHD the advantages

and disadvantages of the alternative

filling materials are fully discussed to

ensure that your requirements

are met.

Composite fillings

are derived from petrochemicals

and therefore have the potential to

be toxic. Diamond composite is an

American manufactured composite available at this practice, which has been tested by an independent laboratory and is reported to be biocompatible i.e. have no allergenic or toxic properties. Other composites are available which appear in my opinion to have better physical properties than Diamond but have not

undergone biocompatibility testing.

Individual biocompatibility

testing is available

if required.

Yes, but research

has shown that there is no

increased level of mercury exposure

to people who have their amalgam fillings removed using the same IAOMT protocol used

in this practice. This involves: mandatory application of a rubber dam for all amalgam removal, amalgam fillings removed sequentially according to galvanic readings, all amalgam removed, alternate air supply and intra-venous vitamin available, patient systemic protection with nutritional supplements for immune

support and mercury detoxification

and referral sources for

detox management.

Local anesthetic is

given before treatment and

you will experience total numbness

before any treatment is started. You

can stop the procedure at any stage by simply lifting your hand if there is a need to communicate a problem- e.g. an onset of discomfort, saliva collecting at the back of the throat, the need to scratch your nose or wanting to take a break.

In all cases treatment is stopped immediately and the

problem addressed.

The ideal treatment

is to replace the amalgam

fillings one quadrant at a time in four appointments over a four week period. This ties in nicely with a mercury detoxification program. However, scheduling is adjusted to fit your personal, business or financial requirements.

Cost varies

accordingto the number

and size of the fillings requiring replacement. Composite fillings vary

in price from $60 to $420 so the total cost for the whole mouth may vary from a few hundred dollars to a few thousand dollars. Some teeth may require porcelain or gold inlays or crowns and this can have

considerable impact

on the cost.

One analogy is a

dripping tap and a basin.

It is considered that once the

amalgam fillings are removed the tap dripping mercury into the body is turned off. However the body burden of mercury is stored in the body tissues and a detoxification

program is necessary to "pull

the plug and empty

the basin".
